Rail Fares Reform: A Call for Affordable and Better Train Services
17.01.2025
A Devon official is urging the government to address high rail fares and enhance connectivity for travelers. The proposed changes aim to make train journeys more affordable and efficient. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Rail Fares Under Scrutiny Amid Public Concerns
Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s transport lead, plans to meet Rail Minister Lord Hendy soon. She seeks to highlight the burden of rail fares and advocate for better wi-fi services.

Davis expressed concerns over the long-term disruptions caused by construction at Old Oak Common. She believes the project, part of the HS2 scheme, could undermine public confidence in rail travel.
The Department for Transport has assured passengers of its commitment to enhancing services and connectivity. However, National Rail predicts disruptions could persist until 2033, affecting key services to Devon and Cornwall.
Advocating for Better Rail Services and Lower Rail Fares
“High train fares are unreasonable and need addressing,” Davis emphasized, calling for a fair pricing model. She also stressed the importance of reliable wi-fi, which could make journeys more productive for passengers.
While similar technologies thrive in Europe and the U.S., British trains lag behind, she noted. Davis believes these upgrades could significantly improve passenger experiences across the region.
Simplified Ticketing and Enhanced Connectivity in Focus
The Department for Transport reaffirmed its commitment to simplifying ticketing systems and modernizing services. “Our reforms will ensure passengers get the best deal on their journeys,” a spokesperson said.
Better wi-fi connectivity remains a priority for the department, promising to deliver advancements alongside ongoing railway reforms. These efforts represent the most significant updates to the UK’s rail system in decades.
Davis acknowledged the challenges posed by construction projects but remains focused on solutions. “We can’t change the disruptions, but we can make travel more valuable,” she concluded.
