Rail Cargo Hungaria Introduces Innovative System for Wheelset Transport by Rail
21.08.2024
Rail Cargo Hungaria (RCH), in collaboration with TS Hungaria and ÖBB-TS, has developed an advanced solution for transporting wheelsets, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This initiative, launched a year and a half ago, aligns with Rail Cargo Group’s strategic goals of reducing road transport and enhancing the competitiveness of rail transport.

The project involved experts from Rail Cargo Hungaria, TS Hungaria, and ÖBB-TS.
The initial version of the solution allowed for the transport of 21 wheelsets per wagon, surpassing the 15 wheelsets that could be accommodated in a truck.
Despite the benefits of rail transport, the cost of road transport remained lower, prompting the developers to continue improving the system.
TS-HU’s solution included the creation of a mobile double-decker wagon system, increasing capacity to 30 wheelsets per wagon.
The prototype of this system is currently undergoing testing.
The travel time between Miskolc and Knittelfeld for wagons with the new double-decker system is approximately 10 days.
TS Hungaria plans to build five more such systems, enabling the rail transport of up to 100 wheelsets each week.
This innovation is expected to reduce the number of trucks on the route by 320 units annually.
