Prototype Hydrogen Locomotive Unveiled for Industrial Use
27.06.2025
A new prototype hydrogen locomotive was unveiled by SITAV at the Hydrogen Expo in Piacenza, designed for shunting and last-mile operations where electrification is impractical. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The 72-tonne four-axle prototype uses a reused frame and bogies, but incorporates new traction, braking, and control systems. It includes a single cab with enhanced visibility and can haul 2,200 tonnes on 4% gradients.

Remote diagnostics and energy recovery during braking are standard, and low-pressure hydrogen simplifies refueling, which only needs to occur once a week, reducing operational disruptions.
Prototype Developed with Modular and Scalable Features
SITAV developed the locomotive with partners OMG Manufacturing, BluEnergy Revolution, and DAKO-CZ. The hydrogen unit was created in collaboration with the University of Genova.
The modular concept supports multiple propulsion options including hydrogen, biodiesel, battery, hybrid, and overhead electric. Configurations range from 450 kW to 900 kW, with a lighter three-axle version under consideration.
Prototype Scheduled for Trials and Public Showcase
The first step in the approval process with ANSFISA, the Italian rail safety agency, has been completed. SITAV expects full approval by late 2025, enabling trials in early 2026.
The locomotive will appear at Expo Ferroviaria in Milan on September 30, 2025. Series production could begin shortly afterward if trials with partners are successful.
