Production of hydrogen fuel cells for transportation in France
18.05.2023
France has announced the establishment of a gigafactory for the production of hydrogen fuel cells for transportation
Inocel, a company based in Belfort, plans to begin serial production of 300 kW fuel cells in 2024 on a site spanning over 15,000 square meters. This information was reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply, citing Rollingstock.
By 2030, the company aims to increase the production of fuel cells to 30,000 units per year and expand its workforce to 700 employees. Additionally, there are plans to expand the power range to 500 kW.
The project received a government support of €8 million. In late 2022, a product sample was presented as part of a power system for a maritime vessel.

The factory will be part of a cluster dedicated to the implementation of hydrogen technologies, with participants including Alstom, which operates a locomotive manufacturing facility in Belfort.
Last year, Alstom announced the development of a hydrogen booster for mainline locomotives.
Currently, Alstom’s series hydrogen-powered train, Coradia iLint, utilizes 200 kW fuel cells from Canadian company Hydrogenics (a subsidiary of Cummins).
France is actively engaged in the production of hydrogen fuel cells for transportation. The country recognizes the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source and is committed to developing a strong hydrogen economy. France is investing in research, development, and infrastructure for hydrogen production, as well as supporting the deployment of hydrogen-powered vehicles. This includes the manufacturing of hydrogen fuel cells for various modes of transportation, including cars, buses, trucks, and trains. The aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector and promote sustainable mobility solutions.
