Output rose by 19% compared to the previous year, and this impresses experts. The company produced 1,472 locomotives earlier, but now it achieved a historic peak.

Locomotive Production in India: Electric Trains Lead

Most new machines are electric locomotives, because network electrification nears completion. Factories built 1,581 electric units of WAP-5, WAP-7, WAG-9, and WAG-12B, NRC, plus 100 WDG 4G/6G diesel locomotives.

Chittaranjan Locomotive Works played a key role and set a new record. It manufactured 700 electric locomotives, exceeding last year’s result by 17%.

Another site, Banaras Locomotive Works in Varanasi, produced 477 electric locomotives. Patiala Locomotive Works in Patiala contributed 304 units to the total.

Joint ventures with foreign companies also supported the production efforts. Thus, projects with Alstom in Madhepura and Wabtec in Marhaura each delivered 100 locomotives.

Locomotive Production in India: Future Plans

The company expands output in Dahod with German firm Siemens. It will supply 1,200 electric locomotives for Indian railways by 2034.

The Make in India initiative strongly backs railway engineering growth in the country. This positions India as a new hub for the rail industry.
