Procurement of High-Speed Trains
30.08.2023
The process of procuring high-speed trains capable of reaching speeds up to 350 km/h has been initiated in California, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) plans to carry out this process in two stages. From August to November, a qualification selection will take place.
Following that, CHSRA will compile a list of potential participants and in the first quarter of 2024, will publish a request for proposals.
The plan is to acquire 6 trains capable of moving at speeds of up to 350 km/h.

The first two prototypes are expected to be ready by 2028, with the remaining trains planned for acquisition by the end of 2030.
The tender also includes a 30-year maintenance, operation of two depots, and a certification center.
The intention is to launch these prospective trains on the Merced – Bakersfield high-speed line, which spans a length of 273.6 km.
Currently, this line is under construction and may potentially become a part of the future San Francisco – Los Angeles line. It’s worth noting that the high-speed rail project in California has been in development for over 25 years.
