First-class cars of Shinkansen trains to be upgraded

The operator will replace 20 standard seats in first-class cars with only six spacious new ones. Each seat will feature a high backrest, lockable door, and extra legroom.

The seats will be rotatable and come with reclining backs to suit passenger preferences. The upgraded zone will also include Wi-Fi access and dedicated luggage space.

With this move, JR Central responds to changing passenger expectations shaped by post-pandemic lifestyles. Travelers now seek privacy, comfort, and digital accessibility.

The company plans to launch the premium class pilot on the Tokaido line, connecting major cities like Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka. If successful, full implementation is expected in the 2027 fiscal year.

Shinkansen to offer one- and two-person private cabins

Additionally, by 2026, N700S trains may feature single and double private cabins. These compartments are designed to offer hotel-like comfort and maximum privacy during travel.

Private cabins will appeal to business travelers and those seeking quiet journeys. The concept offers an alternative to traditional seating, expanding the service range.

JR Central believes that continuously improving service is key to retaining customer loyalty. This approach strengthens the company’s competitive edge in the transportation market.

Investments in modern features are aligned with environmental goals, as all interior updates meet energy efficiency standards. This reflects JR Central’s corporate responsibility values.

Japan’s railway sector is undergoing a transformation, with customer behavior evolving rapidly after the pandemic. Today, the focus is on flexibility, individuality, and safety.

Therefore, JR Central tailors its services to meet these new demands, building the train of the future today. The premium class and private cabins reflect the company’s pursuit of excellence.

The upgraded zones aim to attract a broader audience while increasing loyalty among current customers. These improvements position the Shinkansen as not only fast, but also truly premium.
