23.01.2025
North Somerset Council has announced plans to begin the Portishead Railway Construction by summer 2025. The project awaits final approval from the government to proceed. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Major Steps to Kickstart Portishead Railway Construction
North Somerset Council recently approved measures to ensure swift progress once the government gives its approval. Construction is set to begin within months of receiving the green light, with the goal of starting train operations by autumn 2027.

Council leader Mike Bell stressed the need for urgency, stating, “Delays lead to higher costs, which extend timelines.” He applauded cross-party support and efforts by local MPs to secure the necessary decisions from the Department for Transport. Bell highlighted the importance of avoiding further setbacks to meet the proposed timeline.
Portishead East Councillor Roger Whitfield praised the resilience of the community in championing the project. “This initiative has taken far too long, but we’re hopeful it will finally move forward,” he said. Meanwhile, South Councillor Peter Burden emphasized the council’s unwavering commitment, though he acknowledged that the final decision lies with the government.
Why Portishead Railway Construction Matters?
The £152 million project involves constructing three miles of new track and upgrading existing lines to accommodate passenger trains. New stations in Portishead and Pill are also part of the plan to improve accessibility and service frequency in the area.
This railway is an integral component of the Metrowest initiative, which aims to boost local train services and reconnect communities. The line’s reopening will enhance regional connectivity, benefiting commuters and the local economy.
The project’s significance stems from its potential to promote sustainable transport and reduce road congestion. The restoration, planned since the original line’s closure in 1964 during the Beeching cuts, is a long-overdue development.
While government reviews continue, North Somerset Council remains optimistic about receiving approval soon. If granted, the Portishead Railway Construction will mark a turning point for transport infrastructure in the West of England.
Local leaders and residents eagerly await the start of this transformative project, which promises to bring significant economic and environmental benefits. The region’s future now hinges on timely decisions and collaborative efforts between local authorities and the government.
