Port of LA Expands Export Capacity With Central Valley Deal

The Port of LA has launched a new agreement with the City of Shafter and The Wonderful Company to grow export volumes from California’s Central Valley through a strategic logistics partnership. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Located 18 miles northwest of Bakersfield, the Wonderful Logistics Center spans 3,400 acres and operates along the BNSF Railway line. It currently serves large retailers like Amazon, Ross, Target, and Walmart.

An international rail terminal will open at the site in 2026, adding vital infrastructure for agricultural and commercial exports. The goal is to improve container velocity and global market access.
Port of LA Drives Export Growth From Central Valley
The Port of LA will coordinate closely with Shafter officials and Wonderful Co. to increase the region’s cargo flows and export capabilities. Their combined logistics expertise will help connect inland producers directly to international markets.
Executive Director Gene Seroka praised the deal’s potential for economic development and supply chain efficiency. “We’re committed to helping the Central Valley thrive,” he stated.
Port of LA Repositions Empty Containers for Exporters
As part of the agreement, the port will relocate empty containers from its terminals to Central Valley exporters. This move supports agricultural businesses and addresses the growing need for outbound shipments.
All parties also agreed to promote training programs, share best practices, and support business development efforts. This enhances competitiveness for California’s farming sector on the global stage.
Sepehr Matinifar, logistics VP at Wonderful Co., emphasized the long-term value of the initiative. He said, “This partnership boosts cargo speed and helps our growers compete more effectively worldwide.”
By investing in infrastructure and regional logistics, the Port of LA aims to strengthen California’s export position. And with the rail terminal launch set for 2026, the Central Valley’s role in global trade is set to grow.
