Poland will refuse Russian coal
05.04.2022
The Polish government intends to ban the import of Russian coal at the legislative level.
This was stated by the representative of the Cabinet of Ministers of the State, Petr Müller, informsthe railway magazine Railway Supply with reference to energia.rp.pl.
«We are aware that this may cause legal disputes, unfortunately justified, but we can no longer wait for the EU’s reaction to this,» the official explained.
It is noted that such an embargo at the EU level depends on all member countries, and such an agreement has not been reached, since the Germans, the Dutch and the Hungarians do not agree to such restrictive measures.
The speaker did not specify when exactly the bill would be passed. However, it is planned that by the next heating period, that is, in October of this year, coal from the Russian Federation will no longer be available on the Polish market.
Annually, Poland consumes approximately 8.3-10.8 million tons of Russian raw materials, which is 84% of the total coal imports to Poland.
The Polish energy and heating sector requires approximately 65 million tons of coal a year, mainly from local mines.
Polish companies are able to increase production, but year after year they do not cover such a large gap in the market. So the possibility of deliveries from Australia is being considered.
Also, the Polish government approved a bill on special mechanisms to counter the maintenance of aggression against Ukraine.
The document will freeze Russian and other assets related to supporting military aggression against Ukraine.
