This system benefits travelers with automatic daily and weekly fare capping, helping them save money. Customers enjoy significant discounts compared to standard anytime single and seven-day season tickets.

North Wales bus services adopted similar tap-on, tap-off technology, streamlining payments. Recent data shows over 40% of all transactions now utilize this modern payment method, proving its efficiency.

Expanding the Pay As You Go Ticketing System Across Wales

Three years ago, Transport for Wales launched an integrated ticket for both rail and bus journeys. This initiative allowed faster and more affordable travel between South Wales and Aberystwyth, benefiting thousands.

Between April and December last year, nearly 7,000 passengers used integrated tickets for trips. The route between Carmarthen and Aberystwyth became notably more accessible, enhancing regional connectivity.

Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, expressed satisfaction with passenger engagement. He praised the system’s ability to simplify payments and make public transport more accessible.

Alexia Course, Chief Commercial Officer at Transport for Wales, emphasized customer benefits and efficiency. She highlighted the tap-on, tap-off system as their fastest-growing product since launch.

Transport for Wales introduced this technology at 95 South Wales stations, keeping promises to passengers. The innovation was part of the South Wales Metro project, now successfully delivered.

Besides rail, North Wales buses implemented similar smart payment methods to improve accessibility and convenience. The integrated ticketing model continues growing, merging bus and rail services into one system.

This integrated approach supports their vision for a seamless public transport network across Wales. The goal remains a unified system with one network, one timetable, and one ticket.

Transport for Wales aims to make public transport easier, faster, and more affordable for travelers. Their commitment to innovation ensures sustainable and efficient transit solutions for future generations.
