Who Qualifies for the PATH Reduced Fare Program

Riders who are blind, deaf, or have cognitive, ambulatory, or mental disabilities are eligible. The program also covers those with other verified physical conditions. A valid ID and medical documentation are required.

The standard PATH fare is $3 per trip, so eligible riders will pay just $1.50. The discount aligns with PATH’s existing reduced rate for seniors and reflects its broader accessibility goals.

Port Authority Chair Kevin O’Toole said the program increases access to jobs and education. He credited advocacy groups for supporting this expansion of equitable transit.

Rick Cotton, Port Authority’s Executive Director, noted that improving accessibility remains a top priority. He promised a simple and efficient application process for all eligible riders.

How to Apply for the PATH Disability Fare Discount?

Applicants can apply either by mail or in person at any PATH station or the Journal Square Transportation Center. The process starts June 16, and appointments are recommended for in-person visits.

Mailed applications must include a notarized form, a passport-sized color photo, a government-issued ID, and approved documentation of disability. In-person applicants can skip the photo and notarization steps.

Approved riders will receive a SmartLink card or may opt for a contactless payment method for discounted PATH fares. All details are available at tappandride.com.

PATH’s Board of Commissioners approved the new fare policy as part of the 2025 budget. The initiative marks a significant step toward more inclusive and affordable public transportation.
