Alberta’s Bold Plan for a Passenger Rail Renaissance

The Passenger Rail Master Plan aims to create a sustainable network serving Alberta’s diverse needs. This includes commuter, regional, and high-speed services linking Calgary, Edmonton, and smaller communities. Proposed projects feature connections to international airports and Rocky Mountain parks.

MLA Ron Wiebe described this initiative as essential for economic growth, stating, “Alberta’s future runs on rails.” He emphasized the importance of local input, encouraging Albertans to participate in the survey open until Dec. 20.

Global Insights Fuel Alberta’s Passenger Rail Renaissance

Experts from Ontario, Japan, Spain, and other regions contributed to Alberta’s first passenger rail forum. Their insights guide the development of an adaptable, efficient system. The plan addresses long-standing challenges like low population density and high costs, ensuring long-term success.

Via Rail currently serves eight provinces, with most operations in Ontario and Quebec. Alberta’s reliance on car travel since the 1950s created barriers to rail development. However, the province’s new vision prioritizes connecting smaller hubs like Lethbridge, Grande Prairie, and Fort McMurray.

Participate in Building Alberta’s Rail Future

Albertans are invited to share their thoughts through a survey at alberta.ca/passenger-rail-engagement. It takes 15–20 minutes and closes Dec. 20. Public feedback will shape open houses next year.

The Passenger Rail Master Plan includes a 15-year phased delivery strategy. Alberta’s vision combines bold leadership, public collaboration, and global expertise, ensuring a sustainable, efficient rail network for generations to come.
