Parcel Delivery by Trams in Strasbourg: A Sustainable Initiative by Alstom
18.09.2024
An experiment involving parcel deliveries on trams with Alstom’s participation is being conducted in Strasbourg from September 16 to October 26, as reported by the railway news portal Railway Supply.
The initiative aims to reduce harmful emissions from freight transport within the city limits.

The project involves the company La Poste, the city council, and the carrier CTS. Seven-car Citadis trams, which have been supplied to Strasbourg since 2005, are used for the deliveries.
Each morning, postal workers load the tram with about a hundred parcels, which depart from the station to the city center. At the end of the route, the load is handed over to another postal worker who continues delivery to recipients by bicycle.
It is planned to include another tram route in the experiment. This approach will allow exploring the possibilities of reducing air pollution in cities by replacing cars with environmentally friendly transport.
Similar projects were previously carried out in Germany but did not gain significant traction.
In Singapore, trials for delivering mail by subway began this summer.
The introduction of such solutions could become an important step in combating urban environmental pollution.
Citadis trams have long proven their reliability, and with Alstom’s participation, the project gained the support of a leading transport manufacturer, highlighting its significance.
If the experiment shows positive results, it could serve as a foundation for the widespread adoption of such solutions in other cities in Europe and beyond.
