According to the Multimodal Transportation Technologies, an expert in railroad transportation, over the past 10 years, more than 70,000 freight trains have traveled on the China-Europe routes through Kazakhstan.
Alashankou-Dostyk border crossing saw over 36,600 trains, and since 2016, Horgos dry port has accommodated over 33,400 trains, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Both border crossings handle over half of the total trains between China and Europe.
To enhance cross-border transport efficiency, China is implementing measures such as increasing station capacity and optimizing technological processes.
By 2023, the processing time for a single train is expected to reduce from over 12 to 6–8 hours.
Kazakhstan is also working on projects to boost transit potential, including the construction of the third rail border crossing at Bakhty-Chuguchak, increasing the processing capacity at the China-Kazakhstan border from 28 to 48 million tons per year.
