Operation Lifesaver Boosts Rail Safety with $219K Grants

Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI), partnering with the Federal Railroad Administration and the Posner Foundation of Pittsburgh, awarded $219,155 to expand rail safety education across 11 states. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The grants will fuel public outreach focused on grade-crossing safety and trespassing prevention. Several programs will align with “See Tracks? Think Train!” week, set for September 15-21.

Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington secured funding for diverse initiatives. Some projects include translating digital content, partnering with Minor League Baseball, and enhancing truck driver education about rail safety.
Social media campaigns will target dangerous trends like subway surfing, while family-focused programs will encourage safe rail behavior. These innovative strategies aim to broaden community awareness and reduce preventable rail incidents.

James Payne, director of the FRA grade crossing and trespasser outreach division, praised the partnership. He emphasized that direct public engagement remains crucial for minimizing grade crossing incidents and rail-related fatalities.
