The project will connect the Ontario Line subway with the Lakeshore East and Stouffville GO lines. This integration will shorten travel times and expand access to downtown Toronto, housing, and jobs.

Ontario’s Investment to Create Thousands of Skilled Jobs

In March, the government awarded the construction contract to AtkinsRéalis and Bird Construction. Design partner Hatch Ltd. will support delivery under an alliance contract model.

The development will generate 8,300 annual jobs over 12 years, benefiting crane operators, steelworkers, and other skilled trades. This aligns with Ontario’s Transit-Oriented Communities initiative.

Ontario Plans Infrastructure and Housing Around Transit

The East Harbour site will include housing, daycare, retail, and green space. These additions will support population growth and strengthen neighborhoods around high-capacity transit.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said the project meets the needs of a growing region. She highlighted that with 270,000 new residents last year, efficient transit is essential for future development.

Additional Facts on Ontario’s Transit Commitments

Ontario’s $70 billion investment includes four major subway projects: the Ontario Line, Scarborough Subway Extension, Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, and Yonge North Subway Extension. Together, these upgrades will transform regional connectivity.

Federal Minister Gregor Robertson emphasized that supporting cities like Toronto through transit projects allows communities to thrive. Stronger infrastructure will attract people, improve access, and reduce traffic congestion.
