Starting soon, New York City subway riders will be able to add OMNY Transit Cards directly to Apple Wallet, revolutionizing their daily commute. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is preparing to roll out virtual OMNY cards for commuters and students, enabling them to use their iPhones or Apple Watches for quick, seamless fare payments.

Mobile OMNY Transit Cards Available by December 2025

By December 2025, virtual OMNY Transit Cards will be available for both regular commuters and student riders. This update will let users manage and reload their cards directly from the updated MTA app, alongside the convenience of adding the cards to Apple Wallet. With this transition, New Yorkers can manage their balances without needing a physical card, bringing a new level of ease to the city’s transit system.

The MTA has announced that it plans to fully phase out MetroCards by the end of 2025, moving entirely to the OMNY system.

This transition is in line with similar systems already implemented in other major cities across the U.S., such as San Francisco’s Clipper and Washington DC’s SmarTrip cards, which are both supported by Apple Wallet.

Streamlining Fare Payments with OMNY Transit Cards

By adopting mobile OMNY Transit Cards, the MTA hopes to simplify fare payments and enhance accessibility for millions of subway riders. This change will eliminate the need for physical cards, allowing users to pay directly from their smartphones or smartwatches.

Commuters will soon be able to enjoy the same mobile convenience that residents of other major cities already experience.

The OMNY expansion is part of a larger effort to modernize New York’s transit infrastructure. As the city moves away from the MetroCard, riders will benefit from faster, more flexible payment options, improving the overall commuting experience. The future of transit in New York is now at your fingertips.
