UK Launches Construction of Okehampton Interchange Railway Station

This modern station connects Torridge, North Cornwall, and Exeter via the Dartmoor Line. Okehampton Interchange becomes the town’s second station, boosting travel options significantly.

In 2021, the existing station reopened and welcomed over 250,000 passengers within a year. Now, the new interchange promises even more convenience for eager travelers regionally.

The Department for Transport funds the project, and Devon County Council contributes too. West Devon Borough Council also supports this ambitious transportation upgrade financially.

Located at Okehampton Business Park, the station features a single, accessible platform design. It includes a lift, ramps, and a car park with 200 spaces available.

Travelers find EV charging points and disabled bays, enhancing accessibility for all users. Additionally, improved walking and cycling links integrate seamlessly with local bus services.

Okehampton Interchange Enhances Regional Connectivity

Devon County Council Chairman John Hart celebrates the start of this exciting project. He notes the Dartmoor Line’s benefits, and the interchange expands rail travel opportunities.

Once completed, the station offers hourly services to Crediton, Exeter, and the local station. This schedule ensures reliable transport for commuters and visitors alike hourly.

A turf-cutting ceremony marks the occasion, uniting council members and rail officials. Representatives from Devon County, West Devon, GWR, and Network Rail celebrate together.

Councillor Mandy Ewings, West Devon Borough Council Leader, praises the interchange’s potential. She highlights its role as a transport hub for cars, bikes, buses, and trains.

Ewings emphasizes that this project opens doors to jobs, education, and economic growth. Faster connections across Devon spark opportunities for the town’s eastern communities especially.

Okehampton Prepares for Temporary Rail Adjustments

However, essential track work requires temporary changes to the rail schedule soon. Buses replace trains between Exeter and the town from March 8 to March 14.

This short disruption ensures long-term improvements, and officials urge patience during the process. The new station strengthens the area’s position as a key regional travel hub.

Construction progresses steadily, and the interchange promises to transform transportation in Devon. Local leaders and residents anticipate its positive impact on connectivity and growth.

With sustainable features like cycle parking and EV charging, the station embraces modernity. The facility positions itself as a forward-thinking addition to the Dartmoor Line.

Officials aim to complete the project efficiently, and hourly services begin upon opening. This development underscores the UK’s commitment to enhancing regional rail networks actively.
