Ohio agencies, including the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission and Ohio Rail Development Commission, have outlined major projects to connect cities and strengthen statewide mobility.

Plans feature the “Midwest Connect” corridor linking Columbus with Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne, and Chicago. Another proposal, “3C&D,” aims to unite Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton. A third line would link Cleveland, Toledo, and Detroit.

Federal Support Boosts Ohio Rail Initiatives

Momentum continues because of the Corridor Identification Program, which provides federal funding for route development. “We expect more resources soon,” said William Murdoch, MORPC’s executive director, citing the infrastructure bill’s impact on Amtrak expansion.

However, a recent Ohio Senate decision removed $50,000 intended for rejoining the Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Commission, raising concerns about losing influence in route planning.

Advocates like All Aboard Ohio warn this limits the state’s role in shaping future networks. “Without a seat at the table, Ohio risks being left out,” said John Esterly, the group’s director.

Esterly added that states such as Michigan and North Carolina have successfully expanded passenger service, showing strong demand. Lawmakers plan to reintroduce funding as a separate bill for further debate.

Meanwhile, Amtrak continues national growth. Its Borealis service between St. Paul and Chicago has exceeded expectations, and service between New Orleans and Mobile will return after two decades, reinforcing the demand for modern rail.

Ohio’s commitment to these projects could redefine regional travel and ensure long-term economic benefits across the state.
