Norway Invests in Kongsvinger Railway Line Upgrade

Norway has allocated $130.6 million to upgrade the Kongsvinger railway line, enhancing infrastructure to support longer freight trains and improve overall safety. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Bane NOR signed a contract with Anlegg Øst Entreprenør, which won the tender, to construct a new passing loop northeast of Galterud Station. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer and be completed by autumn 2026.

The new loop will support freight trains up to 740 meters long. The current siding is too short, limiting train traffic. The new facility will resolve this bottleneck.
To implement the project, the contractor will build an embankment across the Glomma River and lay track from Huvnes Bridge to just beyond Gulli Bridge. This will create an uninterrupted freight corridor.
Norway Develops Freight Transport Infrastructure
The Galterud project is part of the first phase of upgrades on the Kongsvinger Line. Additional work is planned at Rånåsfoss, Seterstøa, and Bodung. All phases aim to expand freight transport capacity.
The total modernization budget is $130.6 million. Plans also include the expansion of the Norsenga timber terminal at Kongsvinger Station to support wood and container shipments.
Norway Enhances Safety and Service Efficiency
The Kongsvinger Line is strategically important, linking northern and southern Norway and connecting to Sweden. It carries both freight and passenger traffic.
Currently, 65% of traffic consists of local trains, 20% freight trains, and 15% regional and cross-border services. The upgraded infrastructure will allow more flexible scheduling and reduce delays.
Additionally, Bane NOR will close several unprotected level crossings, replacing them with barrier-equipped crossings. This will reduce risks for local residents and improve safety along the route.
