Northlander Passenger Rail Service Revival in Ontario Moves

Ontario advances plans to restore Northlander Passenger Rail Service, awarding contracts and unveiling fresh train designs. Officials emphasize the project’s potential to connect communities and boost regional economic growth. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The province awarded a contract to rebuild platforms and install shelters at Northlander stops. Timmins and Toronto will be reconnected through a reliable, modern passenger rail network. Government representatives affirm their commitment to enhancing mobility and economic opportunities.

“Under Premier Ford’s leadership, our government is delivering on promises to restore the Northlander,” stated Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. He highlighted how the service would link communities like Muskoka, North Bay, and Timmins while supporting industries and creating jobs.

Enhanced Facilities for Northlander Passenger Rail Service
Construction will improve stations in North Bay, Temagami, Temiskaming Shores, Englehart, Kirkland Lake, Matheson, and Cochrane. Enhancements include raised concrete platforms, better lighting, updated signage, and accessibility improvements. Pre-manufactured shelters will also be installed at multiple stops, with further contracts planned for Timmins-Porcupine station construction.
“Northern Ontario has always driven economic progress, and this project strengthens its future,” remarked George Pirie, MPP for Timmins. He emphasized the importance of connecting the north to economic opportunities and services.
Modern Features of Northlander Passenger Rail Service
Ontario unveiled the Northlander’s new exterior design, showcasing state-of-the-art, accessible features. These include wheelchair lifts, mobility aid storage, galley-style food service, Wi-Fi, and accessible washrooms. Officials view this as a crucial step toward establishing a seamless transportation network.

“Construction ensures Northlander stops remain safe, reliable, and welcoming for passengers,” said Chad Evans, CEO of Ontario Northland. “We’re excited to reveal the train’s exterior design and progress toward a new era of connectivity.”
The Northlander will operate from Timmins to Toronto and vice versa, with seasonal adjustments dictating schedules. Passengers will benefit from 16 stops in both directions, meeting diverse travel needs.
