Safety Enhancements

Five digital train inspection portals have been strategically installed. Additionally, 313 grade crossing protection warning systems have been implemented across the network.

Technological advancements include 130 hot box detectors and 17 acoustic bearing sensors. The company also introduced 29 hot wheel detectors to enhance operational safety. A total of 140 public improvement projects have been successfully completed.

Norfolk Southern Strengthens Rail Tracks and Bridges

The company replaced 558 miles of rail across the network. Norfolk Southern installed 2.1 million cross ties to strengthen track reliability and safety.

Track surfacing efforts covered 4,202 miles to maintain smooth operations. A total of 30,480 bridge ties have been replaced for structural integrity. Crews installed 553 panel turnouts and replaced 43 bridges during the upgrade period.

Bridge rehabilitation projects enhanced 78 existing structures. Norfolk Southern also installed 104 culverts to improve water drainage along critical rail corridors.

Communications and Signals

Technological improvements included 23 signal cut-ins completed across multiple locations. Crews also replaced 180 switch machines for improved rail network efficiency.

The company executed 869 CTC-to-ITCMS cut-ins across different sectors. Additionally, three classification yard speed controllers have been upgraded. Three moveable bridge PLC system upgrades were successfully implemented.
