The board of directors of the American transportation company NJ TRANSIT has approved the acquisition of 36 new Multilevel III double-decker cars from the French conglomerate Alstom, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Each car has a capacity of 142 passengers and can reach speeds of up to 170 km/h. It is 25 meters long.

This purchase is part of a major fleet modernization program that began in 2018.

Since then, 138 units of new equipment have been acquired. In December 2018, NJ TRANSIT ordered 113 double-decker cars from Bombardier Transit Corporation (now Alstom) to replace the old Arrow III trains, which had been in service for over 40 years.

In February 2022, the company also purchased 25 Multilevel III cars.

Currently, NJ TRANSIT operates more than 170 locomotives and approximately 1,200 passenger cars, including over 560 Multilevel III cars produced since 2006.
