Mid Cornwall Metro: Transforming Cornwall’s Transport Infrastructure
Network Rail confirmed that 400m of track near St Blazey will be replaced as part of improvements. Additional safety enhancements on the Ponts Mill viaduct will ensure greater reliability for daily commuters.
Phase one of the project introduces hourly train services between Newquay and Par, launching later this year. Cornwall Council is financing this initiative, demonstrating its commitment to modernizing transport infrastructure.
Renovations at Newquay station included restoring a second platform, laying 500m of new track, and installing a new crossing. These upgrades streamline train operations and improve service efficiency significantly.
Enhancing Public Transport Services for Cornwall’s Future
Matthew Barnes from Great Western Railways emphasized that these improvements are essential for increasing service frequency. Upgraded infrastructure will provide better experiences for passengers and improve network efficiency.
Once the construction and operational preparations conclude, train frequency between Newquay and Par will double. Later, the expanded coast-to-coast service will roll out, further benefiting Cornwall’s commuters.
Councillor Connor Donnithorne highlighted that this project represents Cornwall’s most significant public transport investment in 30 years. Officials expect these developments to enhance accessibility, making travel more convenient for all residents.
