The Newark Airport Station is undergoing a $160 million upgrade to reduce commute times and improve transit access for residents in Newark’s South Ward and nearby North Elizabeth. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey began construction on June 13, introducing a new entry to the station that connects to AirTrain Newark, Amtrak, and NJ TRANSIT.

This development will allow locals to reach the station in under 10 minutes by train, compared to the current 40-minute bus rides. Travel will become faster, easier, and more convenient.
The plan includes a pedestrian bridge extension, indoor waiting areas, and elevators and escalators linking street level to the platforms. Entry will be accessible via Frelinghuysen Avenue.
Designers also included taxi, bus, and rideshare drop-off zones, plus safe pedestrian and bike access. The Newark Airport Station entry is scheduled to open in 2026.
Officials estimate the project will generate 675 jobs and bring $125 million in wages, contributing to $300 million in total economic activity across the region.
Newark Airport Station Project to Boost Regional Connectivity
The new entrance will connect travelers directly to Newark Penn Station, New York Penn Station, and the Northeast Corridor, the busiest rail line in the country.
By expanding access, the Newark Airport Station project also supports broader transit-oriented development and may attract new investment to nearby neighborhoods.
Economic Impact and Long-Term Benefits of Newark Airport Station
Community leaders expect this investment to benefit commuters and local businesses. Improved infrastructure is set to enhance the travel experience and drive long-term economic growth.
The station access upgrade is part of Newark Liberty Airport’s wider redevelopment, which includes a new Terminal B, updated AirTrain, and better pedestrian and vehicle routes.
