Newag will supply PKP Intercity with 63 new locomotives
15.01.2024
The Polish passenger carrier has signed an agreement worth nearly 2.3 billion zlotys (515.5 million dollars), including an option for 32 additional locomotives and a five-year technical service, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This purchase is part of PKP Intercity’s extensive fleet modernization strategy, aiming for all locomotives in its fleet to reach speeds of 160 to 200 km/h by 2030.
An agreement has been signed between Knorr-Bremse and Stadler
The new locomotives are expected to achieve a minimum speed of 200 km/h.
The manufacturer must obtain operating approval in six countries: Poland, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.
The entire fleet will be equipped with the ETCS level 2 system. Newag is required to deliver the first two locomotives within 24 months of contract signing, with the entire order completed within 60 months.
PKP Intercity notes that having a substantial number of locomotives in one series will streamline future maintenance.
Newag will handle the technical service for the first five years or until the first level 4 repair, allowing PKP Intercity staff to gain experience for future self-servicing.
As reported earlier, Newag will also supply 46 single-system Griffin locomotives for PKP Intercity.
