City Rail Link testing in New Zealand

An ambitious railway project, City Rail Link, is being implemented in Auckland. The 11.5 km double-track line will connect central districts, enhancing the transport infrastructure.

A key part of the project is the construction of two tunnels, 3.45 km long, at a depth of 42 m. The first test run of a CAF electric train took place on February 12, 2025, between Waitemata and Maungawhau stations.

During the tests, the train moved at a speed of 5 km/h, and the journey lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes. Specialists checked the train’s clearance within the tunnels and tested the power supply system.

Further tests will assess train compatibility with the new infrastructure. Braking tests on slopes of up to 35‰ and verification of the ETCS management system are also planned.

Once safety is confirmed, test runs will begin at 40 km/h, followed by trials at speeds up to 70 km/h. These tests will ensure the line is fully operational.

Transport network development in New Zealand

With the launch of City Rail Link, the number of passengers reaching the city center in 30 minutes will double. This will greatly improve transport accessibility and ease road congestion.

The line is set to open in 2026, marking a significant milestone for Auckland’s transport system.
