New Trains for Bucharest Metro: A €201.4 Million Purchase
29.04.2025
Bucharest metro operator Metrorex is preparing to announce a tender for the purchase of 12 new trains for the capital’s subway system. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The procurement is estimated at 1 billion RON (approximately €201.4 million, including VAT). These new trains will replace the old IVA model cars, which were produced by the local company Astra Vagoane from 1978 to 1992.

The Need to Update Rolling Stock in Bucharest
Updating the rolling stock is crucial to improving the quality of transportation services. The old IVA model trains no longer meet modern safety and comfort standards. As a result, Metrorex has decided to launch a tender for the supply of new trains that will comply with all current requirements.
Problems with Train Deliveries for Bucharest
Currently, trains for Bucharest are being delivered late by the company Alstom, which manufactures them in Brazil. These delays have affected the stable operation of the capital’s metro system, making the need for new train procurement even more pressing. The new tender will help accelerate the process of updating the rolling stock and resolve the supply issue.
The purchase of new trains will improve passenger comfort, enhance safety, and improve the operational performance of Bucharest’s metro. It is expected that the new trains will significantly reduce the load on the old stock and improve the overall operation of the city’s transport system.
Thus, launching a new tender for the supply of trains is an important step in modernizing the Bucharest metro and improving the quality of transportation services for the city’s residents.
