New Railway Bridge Opens Across the Oder
06.08.2024
A new railway bridge has been opened across the Oder River at the Germany-Poland border, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The structure spans 260 meters and connects the towns of Küstrin-Kietz in Germany and Kostrzyn nad Odrą in Poland.
The bridge was officially inaugurated on July 29, 2024.
The previous bridge at this location was closed in December 2020 and subsequently dismantled.
As a result, passenger services were carried out by buses on an alternate route, significantly increasing travel time.
The project to build the new bridge was repeatedly delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, a shortage of skilled workers, and a deficit of construction materials.
Ultimately, the project cost 65 million euros. The new bridge, weighing 2100 tons, was assembled in Germany and delivered to the installation site in September 2023.
The uniqueness of the structure lies in it being the world’s first mesh-arch bridge with tension elements made of carbon fiber. These materials give the bridge high strength.
The new bridge has two railway tracks, allowing trains to travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h.
Previously, the old bridge had only one track, with a maximum speed of 30 km/h.
The new bridge accommodates the sole cross-border route Berlin-Kostrzyn, operated by the German passenger carrier Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB).
The opening of the new bridge across the Oder is a significant event for the region’s transport infrastructure, greatly reducing travel time and improving passenger transport quality.
