Rail Projects to Link Key Metropolitan Areas

Officials project that the initiative will create around one million jobs and significantly improve the quality of life for millions of residents. They view this development as a strategic step to strengthen regional economies.

Construction already started on more than 3,000 kilometers of passenger rail lines, linking Mexico City with Nuevo Laredo and Nogales. In the first phase, four key routes are underway: Mexico City–Pachuca, Mexico City–Querétaro, Querétaro–Irapuato, and Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo.

An interdisciplinary team from SICT, DEFENSA, SEDATU, SEMARNAT, BIENESTAR, CONANP, INAH, INPI, and local governments is coordinating efforts to ensure seamless development. Their collaboration highlights the project’s national significance.

Rail Projects to Improve Safety and Environmental Impact

The National Railway Plan outlines multiple benefits, including faster travel times, improved route safety, and a lower carbon footprint, all while enhancing everyday life for millions.

Officials reclaim public railway services after decades dominated by freight transport companies. This move aims to triple the number of operational kilometers between 2018 and 2024.

In March, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina launched construction of the Mexico City–Pachuca rail line. In April, they inaugurated the Mexico City–Querétaro line.

By July, the government will introduce the Querétaro–Irapuato and Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo lines. Combined, these projects will total approximately 786 kilometers and mark a transformative moment for Mexico’s railway system.
