New ICE Plant: A Key Milestone for Deutsche Bahn

The New ICE Plant will be one of Europe’s most advanced and sustainable railway maintenance facilities. Located at the former Dortmund freight station, it will support Deutsche Bahn’s growing ICE fleet. By the decade’s end, the fleet will expand from 410 to 450 trains, necessitating increased maintenance capacity.

This €400 million investment will also create 500 new jobs, including apprenticeships, contributing to Dortmund’s local economy and workforce development. The facility will feature a cutting-edge, four-track workshop capable of servicing up to 17 ICE trains daily, focusing on ICE 4, ICE 3, and ICE 3neo models.

Sustainability at the Heart of the New ICE Plant

Aiming for 100% climate neutrality, the New ICE Plant will include several innovative features. A geothermal energy system will generate 5,000 MWh annually, while an 8,500 m² photovoltaic system will meet over half of the plant’s energy needs. The facility will also include 28,000 m² of green roofing to promote biodiversity and energy efficiency.

These measures align with Deutsche Bahn’s broader commitment to sustainable development, making the plant a benchmark for future railway projects across Europe.

Dortmund Mayor Norbert Schilff emphasized the significance of this project for the city, praising its job creation, economic benefits, and commitment to innovation. Dr. Michael Peterson, DB Board Member, also highlighted the collaborative efforts enabling rapid progress and its importance in enhancing railway reliability.

The New ICE Plant reflects Deutsche Bahn’s dedication to combining modern technology with sustainable practices. It ensures that the growing demand for rail travel is met while maintaining high operational standards and environmental responsibility.

This cutting-edge facility not only strengthens Deutsche Bahn’s position in the railway industry but also sets a new standard for efficiency and sustainability. It serves as a model for future developments in European rail infrastructure.
