Network Rail will extend the lifespan of the historic Ouse Valley Viaduct by 180 years thanks to a major repair program that is already well underway, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This viaduct, built in 1841, is a crucial part of the UK’s railway infrastructure.
RailPulse Launches Innovative Real-Time Freight Car Monitoring Platform
It is located on the London-Brighton line, one of the busiest routes in the country.
Every hour, 20 passenger trains travel along this route, not to mention the freight trains.
Annually, passenger traffic reaches 17 million people, with around 52,000 passengers daily on weekdays.
The viaduct is impressive in its size and architectural significance: it stands 29 meters tall, spans 450 meters in length, and its 37 arches make it one of the most recognizable railway structures in the UK.
As a historical heritage site, the viaduct requires a specialized approach to repairs.
Network Rail, in collaboration with professional stonemasons, began work to restore eight arches, using 2,600 handmade bricks produced by local artisans.
To reinforce the structure, 40 tons of stone were also delivered from quarries in France.

In addition to arch repairs, the program includes upgrading parapets, improving the drainage system, and other measures aimed at enhancing train safety.
As a result of these efforts, the viaduct’s lifespan will be extended by 180 years, ensuring the preservation of this vital infrastructure for future generations.
