Network Rail to Improve Fibre Coverage Across Major Routes

Neos Networks will lay 1,000 km of ultrafast fibre optic cable on major routes like the East Coast, West Coast, Chiltern, and Great Western main lines. This rollout will later expand to over 5,000 km.

The new fibre will boost both passenger connectivity and internal rail system monitoring. It also provides a foundation for future digital technologies across the rail network.

Network Rail Partnership Expands 4G/5G at Tunnels and Stations

Freshwave will work with mobile operators to improve coverage in 57 key tunnels and nearby cuttings. This includes areas around King’s Cross and the Chipping Sodbury tunnel near Bristol.

The plan includes building new 4G/5G infrastructure at 12 major Network Rail stations, including Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly. These upgrades will enhance connectivity in busy hubs and underground sections.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the upgrades will “revolutionise journeys” from Edinburgh to Euston and “deliver more reliable, efficient rail service” across the country.

Neos Networks also intends to commercialize unused fibre capacity. This will create a digital backbone connecting data centres and edge computing facilities for enterprise customers.

Jeremy Westlake, CFO of Network Rail, praised the funding model. He emphasized its ability to accelerate telecom upgrades and deliver strong returns for taxpayers while boosting national digital infrastructure.

Work on Project Reach will begin in 2026, with full rollout expected by 2028. In a related development, Network Rail recently signed a £500 million contract with British Steel to supply 337,000 tonnes of track over five years starting July 1.
