Network Rail Plans Nine-Day Closure for Redhill-Tonbridge Upgrades
06.06.2025
Network Rail will suspend service between Redhill and Tonbridge for nine days from August 16 to August 25, 2025, to perform major upgrades and improve network reliability. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Crews will replace 13 miles of high-voltage feeder cables between Nutfield and Leigh to deliver stable power to electrical systems. At Edenbridge, engineers will install two 360-meter steel retaining walls.

They will also drill and secure 226 nine-meter-long soil nails to reinforce the embankment structure. This work enhances slope stability and supports long-term infrastructure resilience.
Network Rail Reinforces Embankment and Power Supply
In parallel with cable replacement, Network Rail will conduct structural investigations on 11 bridges across the route. At Godstone, 200 meters of rail will be replaced to ensure smoother operations.
Although trains won’t run between Redhill and Tonbridge, mainline services from both stations will continue without disruption. Bus replacement services will operate during the closure period.
According to Lucy McAuliffe, Sussex Route Director, Network Rail is concentrating all tasks into a single window to avoid multiple weekends of disruption. She stressed the importance of minimizing impact on student travel during term time.
Network Rail Coordinates Bridge Work and Maintenance
In addition to strengthening the embankment and replacing track, teams will carry out hundreds of essential maintenance jobs along the line. These efforts aim to boost safety and performance across the Southern network.
Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys. Network Rail appreciates travelers’ patience and support as it works to improve service quality and reduce future disruptions.
