The agreements span eight years, running from April 2025 to March 2033, with potential extensions. Specifically, Network Rail can extend them by two years if performance meets expectations.
Clive Berrington, Network Rail’s Group Director, emphasized the investment’s importance for Britain’s railways. He noted that it ensures a safe, reliable network for passengers and freight users alike.
Moreover, the long-term agreements encourage suppliers to upgrade their equipment fleets. Consequently, they will introduce cutting-edge machines and innovative technologies to the rail sector.

The updated agreements mark the third generation of such deals with enhanced standards. Network Rail designed them to reflect the latest technological advancements and operational needs.
Throughout the contract period, the four suppliers will compete to maintain high performance. However, Network Rail retains the flexibility to remove underperforming companies or machines.
