24.01.2025
Network Rail has announced its revised timeline for the reopening of Botley Road in Oxford. The road, essential for city access, is scheduled to reopen by August 2026. This summer, pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from a new, wider walkway that significantly enhances convenience and safety. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The updated project plan incorporates advanced flood defense measures, including underground concrete layers and cutting-edge water pumps. These systems will effectively manage rising groundwater and surface water during construction and beyond.

Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy acknowledged the community’s frustration with delays, emphasizing that minimizing disruption remains a top priority. Network Rail, working closely with local councils and stakeholders, has committed to delivering a robust plan that ensures progress while addressing local concerns.
Key project elements include utility diversions, Botley Road enhancements, and the replacement of Sheepwash Bridge. These upgrades will increase rail service capacity and improve station accessibility, benefiting the community for years to come.
To address community needs, Network Rail has introduced several measures. The Botley Flyer bus service operates five days a week, ensuring accessible transport. Enhanced tunnel lighting, CCTV, and signage upgrades improve pedestrian safety, while new mobility services assist disabled passengers.
Local businesses receive promotional support through banners, posters, and social media campaigns. Network Rail also holds regular business roundtables, gathering feedback and exploring further mitigation options.
The organization has launched a feedback scheme, encouraging community members to share ideas at OxfordFeedback@networkrail.co.uk. These contributions will help refine the project while ensuring minimal disruption to residents and businesses.
Initial delays stemmed from unforeseen challenges, including the discovery of a larger-than-expected Victorian brick arch and complications with water and sewer lines. Solutions have now been integrated into the updated timeline, ensuring the project’s timely completion.
Key Updates from Network Rail on Botley Road Project
Marcus Jones, Network Rail’s Western route managing director, apologized for the inconvenience caused by extended delays. He reaffirmed Network Rail’s commitment to delivering the project efficiently and minimizing disruptions wherever possible.
Residents can learn more at the next public information event on January 29 at the West Oxford Community Association Centre. Registration is open to those wishing to attend and receive project updates.
Regular updates on the work are available through newsletters and the Oxfordshire Connect Facebook page. Network Rail encourages community members to stay informed and contribute to the ongoing improvement of the project.
This project will significantly improve Oxford’s transport infrastructure, delivering enhanced connectivity, expanded pedestrian pathways, and improved cycling routes while supporting sustainable growth for the city.
