04.07.2025
Work on the Liverpool–Wrexham route has officially started as the first step in delivering Network North Wales, following the confirmation of upgrades in the Padeswood area. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Transport Secretary Ken Skates and Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens visited the site to mark the beginning of the project, which is backed by at least £445 million in UK Government investment.

This funding was confirmed in the Comprehensive Spending Review and aims to transform regional transport by increasing service frequency and freight efficiency across North Wales.
Network North Wales to Improve Connectivity and Freight Access
The upgrade at Padeswood will directly support both passenger and freight traffic. The site, which serves the Heidelberg Materials cement works, will soon accommodate improved freight logistics.
Within three years, the line will offer two trains per hour between Liverpool and Wrexham, significantly enhancing public transport for the region and supporting local economic growth.
Ken Skates highlighted the benefits, stating that the improvements will boost industrial logistics and expand train services, which are essential for connecting communities and businesses across North Wales.
Further Expansion Plans Under Network North Wales Vision
Network North Wales is designed to be an integrated, high-frequency system. In addition to Padeswood, the region will see 50% more trains on the North Wales Main Line and better service between Chester and Wrexham.
The introduction of Pay As You Go ticketing will simplify access and encourage greater rail usage. These developments align with efforts to reduce emissions and ease road congestion by shifting freight to rail.
By improving connectivity and investing in modern infrastructure, the initiative will attract investment and promote job creation. Network North Wales will deliver lasting benefits for both commuters and industries across the region.
