Mumbai’s Suburban Rail Network receives a ₹52,724‑crore boost under MUTP schemes to enhance connectivity and commuter capacity across Mumbai’s busiest corridors. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Railways Ministry approved projects totaling ₹52,724 crore, including ₹8,087 crore for MUTP‑II, ₹10,947 crore for MUTP‑III, and ₹33,690 crore for MUTP‑IIIA. These initiatives aim to modernize corridors and add new lines.

Work includes the Panvel‑Karjat link, Virar‑Dahanu quadrupling, and the Airoli‑Kalwa Elevated Corridor. Authorities also prioritize advanced trespass control measures and procurement of modern rolling stock to boost efficiency and safety.
Rolling stock and integration in Mumbai’s Suburban Rail Network
To meet rising demand, officials sanctioned 238 new 12‑car rakes under MUTP‑III and IIIA, costing $2.2 bn. These trains will enhance capacity and passenger comfort across major routes.
Meanwhile, MRVC Ltd, a joint venture between the Railways and Maharashtra government, manages execution on a 50:50 cost basis. The ministry also works with MMRDA to integrate metro and rail systems, as seen at Andheri East and Ghatkopar stations.
