Mumbai will receive a $213 million investment in 2025–26 to modernize its suburban railway system, doubling last year’s funding and driving major upgrades across the network. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Because the project follows a cost-sharing model, Maharashtra’s state government is expected to match the investment. This partnership accelerates the creation of new corridors and improved passenger infrastructure.
According to Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) chief Vilas Wadekar, the funding will enhance speed, safety, and capacity for millions of daily riders.
MUTP Drives Mumbai’s Suburban Infrastructure Expansion
New corridors and modern signaling systems are progressing under MUTP. These upgrades will reduce overcrowding and improve scheduling efficiency on Mumbai’s busiest routes.
Additionally, MUTP investments include station redevelopments and rail system enhancements designed to meet long-term transit growth.
Mumbai Stations Upgraded Under Amrit Bharat Scheme
Simultaneously, the Central Railway is implementing the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) to transform 16 suburban stations, including Parel, Matunga, Chinchpokli, and Wadala.
The ABSS provides modular sewage systems, new lighting, ventilation, water stations, modern signage, and resurfaced platforms to elevate passenger comfort.
With coordinated funding and execution, Mumbai’s rail system is on track for a safer, more efficient future, backed by both federal and state authorities.
