Valued at $1.3 billion, the contract assigns 160 cars to LIRR and 156 to Metro-North. Alstom will manufacture the trains in New York State, creating hundreds of local jobs.

Initial pilot cars are expected in 2029. Full fleet delivery will continue through 2032, gradually replacing M-3 models that have exceeded their service lifespan.

The new M-9A cars are based on Alstom’s M-9 platform. Riders will benefit from USB charging ports, wider windows, and improved restroom accessibility for a better passenger experience.

Trains will run on electrified lines, including the Harlem, Hudson, and Long Island corridors. This order marks the first phase of a larger MTA program to add nearly 2,000 railcars under its capital plan.

Tim Mulligan, MTA’s Rolling Stock Program Chief, said the strategy focuses on proven design and speed. “We’re delivering faster, smarter, and more cost-effectively,” he stated.

Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the project’s impact on daily riders. “New Yorkers deserve modern, reliable transit,” she said. “These new railcars are key to maintaining high service standards.”
