Morocco has signed contracts with Hyundai Rotem and CAF to purchase modern electric trains. The delivery of 150 trainsets will help upgrade the railway network ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The state-owned operator ONCF has signed agreements with South Korean and Spanish companies following a competitive tender. The contract includes not only train procurement but also the construction of factories and depots.

Hyundai Rotem has committed to delivering 110 double-deck trains capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h. Similar models are already successfully operating in Australia, proving their reliability.

The contract, worth 18 billion Moroccan dirhams ($1.5 billion), is the largest in Hyundai Rotem’s history. It also marks the company’s first project in Africa, opening new opportunities for further expansion.

Some of the electric trains will be assembled locally, while 90% of components will be supplied by 200 South Korean manufacturers. Technical maintenance will be carried out in partnership with the national railway operator Korail.

Future of Morocco’s Railway Development

The agreement with Spanish company CAF includes the delivery of the remaining 40 trainsets, though contract details remain undisclosed. As part of the same tender, Alstom secured an order for up to 18 high-speed trains.

This project aims to enhance the country’s railway infrastructure, which is crucial ahead of major international events. Improved transportation will boost mobility and contribute to economic growth.
