Modernization of the Railway Infrastructure at Bremerhaven Port
02.12.2024
Modernization of the railway infrastructure at Bremerhaven Port aims to improve transportation efficiency and capacity. The project focuses on enhancing logistics and ensuring seamless operations for freight services. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Expansion of the Speckenbüttel Station and Track Upgrades
The Bremen authorities have decided to upgrade the railway infrastructure of Bremerhaven Port to strengthen its efficiency. Over half of the containers passing through the port are transported by rail, requiring modernization.

The project emphasizes expanding the Speckenbüttel sorting station by increasing the number of tracks. Currently, the station operates 16 tracks, but this number will rise to 23 to accommodate growing demand.
The €56.1 million initiative aims to meet modern logistics needs and boost operational efficiency. Additional tracks will handle trains up to 740 meters long, optimizing cargo transportation.
Technical and Digital Innovations in Bremerhaven Port
To enhance performance, heating devices will be installed on switch points for improved winter operation. Advanced lighting systems will also increase safety and efficiency in daily operations.
An automatic brake testing system will ensure safer freight movement across the railway network. These innovations will improve the overall quality of services in the region.
This project is integrated with the Bremen–Bremerhaven corridor reconstruction program, preventing bottlenecks during the construction process and reducing logistical costs.
Simultaneously, the station will adopt a new microprocessor-based control system under DB InfraGO’s digitalization strategy. These upgrades align with broader modernization goals.
By the end of 2024, the railway infrastructure at Bremen and Bremerhaven will transition to the PRINOS system. This system enhances operational and informational processes, ensuring reliability and streamlined logistics.
These comprehensive measures will secure Bremerhaven Port’s role as a key logistics hub in Germany and Europe.
