SBS Transit Invests $400 Million in Rubber-Tyred Trains
Between 2022 and 2023, SBS Transit signed contracts worth $400 million with Mitsubishi for 25 Crystal Mover Rubber-Tyred Trains. The deal also includes signaling systems and depot equipment.
Mitsubishi builds the fleet at its Mihara plant in Japan. The remaining 23 trains will arrive in stages until 2027. They will replace older C810 models from 2000–2003.
The previous generation included 25 single-car and 8 two-car trains. All of them operate on two key light rail lines in Singapore and are nearing the end of their lifecycle.
Singapore Expands Transit with Multiple Rubber-Tyred Systems
While Mitsubishi upgrades the main network, Alstom continues deploying its Innovia APM 300R on the Bukit Panjang LRT line. This system uses a different configuration and cannot operate with Mitsubishi’s equipment.
Despite the incompatibility, both systems demonstrate Singapore’s multi-technology approach to transit modernization. The city aims to enhance reliability, comfort, and efficiency for commuters.
By investing in next-generation Rubber-Tyred Trains, Singapore ensures long-term sustainability and reduced maintenance costs in its transit operations.
