Metrorail Expands Weekend Hours and Updates Silver Line Routes
21.06.2025
Metrorail is implementing major service upgrades this weekend, including new operating hours, Silver Line route changes, and updates to the Yellow and Red Lines for better regional coverage and efficiency. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Expanded Service Hours on Metrorail
Starting Sunday, Metrorail trains will begin running at 6 a.m. and continue until 2 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Riders can now travel earlier in the morning and later into the night.

This shift benefits both early commuters and late-night passengers, allowing travel options throughout the weekend with just a short overnight break. Metro Board Chair Valerie Santos said it reflects smart planning and budget control.
Metrorail Map Updates and Route Shifts
Silver Line trains from Stadium-Armory will now split into two eastbound directions. One will proceed to Downtown Largo, and the new route will end at New Carrollton after serving five Orange Line stations.
Riders should check platform signage carefully before boarding, as Metro’s new map highlights these route changes using hashed lines. The updated map also includes visuals for upcoming Yellow Line adjustments.
In December, Yellow Line service will partially resume to Greenbelt, adding nine shared stops with the Green Line, including Fort Totten. These additions appear as a hashed yellow overlay alongside the Green Line on the revised system map.
Faster Red Line and Improved Reliability
Metro is also reducing peak-hour Red Line wait times from five to four minutes starting Monday. This change aims to improve weekday rush-hour flow and reduce congestion during the busiest travel periods.
Despite recent Red Line disruptions, Metro CEO Randy Clarke said teams are actively working on solutions. By Friday, normal operations had resumed, showing progress toward better reliability.
With these enhancements, Metrorail is focused on delivering faster, more reliable, and more flexible service to better serve riders across the Washington region.
