Metro-North Reveals Heritage Series Locomotive No. 203
20.06.2025
Metro-North has unveiled its newest locomotive in the Heritage Series, honoring 40 years of commuter rail history with a hand-painted tribute to the original MTA design. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Unlike previous units, this locomotive was not wrapped but carefully painted by Metro-North employees at the North White Plains shop. Their detailed work reflects a return to craftsmanship and institutional pride.

Inspired by the 1979 color scheme, the design features a silver aluminum body with a bold blue stripe. This livery originally appeared on seven dual-mode Conrail locomotives designed to run on the Hudson and Harlem lines.
Metro-North inherited these units in 1983 when the railroad officially launched operations. They remained in service for nearly two decades, later replaced in the early 2000s by the current fleet.
Locomotive No. 203 Highlights Metro-North Legacy
By reviving this classic look, the railroad connects past and present. It honors the early days of regional service while reinforcing Metro-North’s long-standing role in the community.
Employees involved in the repaint emphasized accuracy and quality. Their effort showcases technical expertise and reflects deep respect for the agency’s roots.
Locomotive Enters Service Across New York and Connecticut
The restored unit is scheduled to begin passenger service on June 20. It will operate between New York City and nearby suburban destinations, continuing the tradition of reliable and accessible transport.
As part of the Heritage Series, the new locomotive celebrates Metro-North’s evolution while remaining firmly rooted in its founding values. Riders can now experience a piece of history on their daily commute.
This initiative blends nostalgia with progress, proving that even as the railroad moves forward, it never forgets where it started.
