Metro network expansion strengthens connectivity

Kolkata achieved a major milestone in public transit as the Metro network grew by 14 kilometers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the expansion at Jessore Road station, signaling a leap in the city’s modern transport infrastructure.

The project added three sections: a 2.45-kilometer stretch on the Green Line between Esplanade and Sealdah, a 6.77-kilometer Yellow Line segment linking Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar (airport), and a 4.39-kilometer Orange Line extension from Ruby to Beleghata.

Residents celebrated as trains made their inaugural runs, carrying schoolchildren and railway employees. The expansion promises smoother daily commutes and supports the city’s growing population with faster and more reliable service.

Metro network boosts economic and urban growth

During his speech, Modi highlighted that India’s Metro network has expanded from 250 kilometers in 2014 to over 1,000 kilometers today, making it the world’s third-largest system. He emphasized the importance of direct links between Howrah and Sealdah stations and the airport.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reflected on her role in planning these projects during her tenure as railway minister, crediting collaboration between state and central agencies for the successful execution of the vision.

By Friday evening, the Sealdah-Esplanade route opened for commercial service, completing the East-West corridor. Regular operations for the Yellow and Orange lines will start on Monday, with the airport station becoming a key interchange hub.

Local commuters view the expansion as transformative. “It’s a historic moment,” said Ashok Gargari, a railway employee from Kharagpur. “This will change how the city moves every day.”
