Metra Begins $56M Overhaul of 95th St./CSU Station

Metra has launched a $56 million renovation of the 95th Street/Chicago State University Station to modernize infrastructure and improve commuter access to the university campus on Chicago’s South Side. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Construction, awarded to John Burns Construction of Westmont, will replace the station’s platform, stairs, and current headhouse. In addition, a new street-level entrance with an enclosed storefront will be constructed on 95th Street.

The project also includes a new elevator, a canopy-covered platform, and a CSU campus headhouse connected to a nearby parking lot via a pedestrian walkway. Work is scheduled for completion by late 2027.
Metra Upgrade Enhances Accessibility and Campus Connection
Metra CEO Jim Derwinski said this initiative represents a key opportunity to deepen collaboration with Chicago State University and provide a modern, welcoming station for students and residents.
He thanked federal, state, and local leaders for supporting the upgrade, which aims to offer reliable, accessible transit for South Side communities and beyond.
Metra Project Backed by Local Leaders and Federal Support
Chicago State University President Z Scott called the renovation vital for the Southeast Side and highlighted the partnership with Metra as a priority of her administration. She praised the groundbreaking as the result of years of community effort.
U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth also emphasized the importance of the project, noting that every Chicagoan deserves safe and inclusive public transit, regardless of ZIP code.
The All Stations Accessibility Program, which she co-sponsored, is providing crucial funding to ensure ADA compliance. As work progresses, the agency promises continued outreach and improved infrastructure for all riders.
