Merseyrail Fundraiser to Run 107 Miles for Charity Challenge
06.02.2025
At the end of February, Merseyrail Fundraising Officer Alex Rigby will embark on an extreme endurance challenge. His goal is to raise over £35,000 for Centre 56, a charity supporting domestic abuse survivors. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Merseyrail’s Ultra-Marathon Route and Fundraising Goal
On Friday, 28th February, Alex will start his journey in Chester, covering 107 miles across 69 stations. His route includes Ellesmere Port, New Brighton, West Kirby, Ormskirk, Headbolt Lane, Southport, and Hunts Cross.

This ambitious challenge follows his previous 60-mile ultra-marathon covering Merseyrail’s Northern Line. By pushing his physical limits, Alex hopes to raise awareness and funds for families affected by domestic violence.
Centre 56 was founded in the 1970s, offering refuge and professional childcare for children affected by domestic abuse. The charity provides a safe, nurturing environment to rebuild trust and emotional well-being.
Merseyrail’s Commitment to Centre 56 and Community Support
Merseyrail has chosen Centre 56 as one of its four supported charities for 2025. The railway network actively collaborates with the organization, ensuring the fundraiser’s success.

Passengers across the network can donate by scanning QR codes displayed on digital screens. Every contribution directly supports Centre 56’s mission to protect vulnerable children.
Several Merseyrail staff members, including Managing Director Neil Grabham, will participate in the run. Their involvement highlights the company’s dedication to social responsibility and community support.
Domestic violence remains a serious issue in the UK, with one in four women experiencing abuse. In England and Wales, a woman is tragically killed by a partner every five days.
Merseyrail’s Charity of the Year program has raised over £1 million for social causes since its launch. Last year, Alex Rigby’s efforts alone generated nearly £30,000 for Centre 56.
By combining endurance sports with fundraising, this initiative brings attention to domestic violence survivors. Each mile Alex runs represents a step toward a safer future for affected families.
Merseyrail encourages passengers and the public to support the fundraiser. Every donation contributes to creating a secure environment for children escaping domestic abuse.
