Major August Works Planned on West Coast Main Line
23.07.2025
Passengers should prepare for major travel changes as Network Rail starts essential improvements on the West Coast Main Line from August 2 to August 23, including multiple infrastructure upgrades. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Extensive Work on West Coast Main Line

The upgrade program will include strengthening the River Trent Viaduct in Stone and renewing tracks in Stone, Hixon, and Congleton. Engineers will also enhance drainage systems at Trentham and replace points in Macclesfield for better performance.

Crews will work on platform improvements at Poynton station and construct a new footbridge at Longport station. In addition, power supply upgrades to overhead lines in Stockport will improve energy efficiency and reliability.
Greek Street Project and Long-Term Benefits
One of the most significant initiatives is the $26 million demolition and rebuild of the Greek Street Roundabout in Stockport. Combining this with rail works minimizes disruption while saving both time and cost.
Christian Irwin OBE, Network Rail’s Capital Delivery Director, explained that the rare three-week closure allows the team to deliver extensive improvements efficiently. He emphasized that this approach will enhance future reliability for passenger and freight trains.
Passengers should plan ahead and check schedules using National Rail Enquiries. While these works cause temporary inconvenience, they will deliver long-term benefits such as smoother journeys, improved capacity, and reduced delays on the West Coast Main Line.
